When we speak of health we not only refer to the physical body, but to the balance between the mind, the body and the “spirit”. These terms, mind and spirit, may have a different meaning for each in individual. It is the process of discovering and exploring these that composes a huge aspect of our journey towards greater health.
A healthy mind and spirit may then be reflected in a healthier body, or physical state.
There are many exercises and ways to work with the mind and spirit; some based on specific religious or spiritual belief systems, but not necessarily so.
Here are some universal ways of finding greater balance, harmony and understanding therefore cultivating less stress, more peace and an overall feeling of connection to ourselves and to our surroundings, to others and our environment.
*Breathing- breathing is a process that we cannot live without, yet most of the time we are unaware of this action. By taking a few moments to focus on our breath, it creates greater awareness of our body, and of the “life force” that moves through us. A few ways to practice with out breath include the practice of yoga, referred to as pranayama.
Begin with this simple exercise-
Sit or lie down in a comfortable position, inhale from your belly for a count of 3, hold your breath for a count of 6, exhale slowly through your nose for a count of 10.
